Apple today released iOS 17.0.3, which, as the name suggests, is a very small incremental update to iOS 17. Or rather, it’s that if you own anything other than an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max. If you own one of these devices, then this is the Holy Grail you have been waiting for. THE Cold (excuse the obvious pun) update to install immediately.

That’s right, this is what should fix the overheating issues that many people have been reporting on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max since these phones launched. Last week, Apple finally acknowledged the problems after countless online reports and promised that a future software update would fix whatever was causing the overheating.

This is the update. Meanwhile, Apple also worked with developers of specific apps, such as Instagram and Uber, which “overloaded” the A17 Pro chipset used by the two phones in question, thus causing heat dissipation problems. Presumably this means that even some of the more malicious apps should receive updates in the near future to correct their behavior.

The update out today, build 21A360, also addresses a kernel vulnerability that could allow an attacker to gain elevated privileges. This is a flaw that Apple says was exploited in iOS 16.6 and earlier. So even if you don’t have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, it’s probably safe to upgrade as soon as possible. Keep in mind that iPadOS 17.0.3 is also coming out, but it only has the security fix.
