Huawei has quietly launched three Mate 60 phones in the past two weeks, all with 5G support. Several Chinese sources now claim this is the first step in a new offensive in the global smartphone market.

EN Home they cited internal sources who said that Huawei lays the foundation with the domestic market in China and continues its expansion abroad, but an exact timeline is currently unavailable.

Huawei has been held hostage to a trade war between China and the United States that began more than five years ago. As a result, the company was blocked from accessing most US technologies, but the Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro, and Mate 60 Pro+ arrived with 5G and a Kirin 9000S chipset built on the 7nm technology process.

The company officially did not comment on the SoC situation, but domestic reports revealed that the chip was entirely Chinese-made, raising further questions about how local companies acquired the know-how for such complicated processes in such a short time.

Huawei has already raised its annual production forecast from 30 million in January to 38 million today. Of these, 20 million units have already been shipped, and Mate 60 Pro units will account for another 6 million, or a third of the remaining orders.

There have been some reports that the series may not arrive outside of China, but Huawei has not released an official statement on the matter, leaving the door open for an eventual global release.

A quick look back saw that Huawei held 42% of the Chinese smartphone market, but is now less than 10%, while global market share is currently at 3%, a six-fold decline from mid-2019.
