We subjected the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max to our rigorous SBMARK Selfie test suite to measure its performance in photos and videos from an end-user perspective. This article explains how the device performed in a variety of tests and different common use cases and aims to highlight the most important results of our tests with an extract of the acquired data.

Pros
- Precise exposure of the target on the face
- Nice color and skin tone
- Good detail in the internal and external shots
- Quite accurate depth estimation in bokeh mode
- Wide dynamic range and precise exposure of the target in the video
- Accurate white balance in the video
- The wide focus range in the video means that all subjects are in focus
versus
- Luminance noise
- Occasional streams of white balance
- Cropping in challenging backlit scenes
- Fixed focus means that subjects further away from the camera are not in focus
- High levels of noise in the video, especially in low light conditions
- Residual motion in walking videos
- Loss of detail in video in low light conditions
With all iPhone 13 series devices sharing the same specifications and processor as the front camera, it is safe to assume that the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Selfie results are very close to those of the iPhone 13 Pro. We confirmed this by submitting Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max to SBMARK Selfie Full Test Protocol.
In this outdoor shot, you can see that the image output of the two cameras is virtually identical, with the same high level of detail and good subject exposure. There is some highlight clipping on the brighter background, but overall the iPhone’s front-facing camera copes very well with this difficult backlit scene.

Not only is the still image quality very similar on 13 Pro Max and 13 Pro. The same goes for video shooting. In this example, you can see that the subject is well exposed but the stabilization system cannot counteract all gait movements.
