The iPhone 15 family is not out yet, but we are already talking about its successors. Specifically, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is expected in September 2024. This device will have a rather unique feature, according to China’s prolific (and usually reliable) leakster Digital Chat Station.

According to him, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with a “Super Telephoto” periscopic zoom camera. Apparently this designation refers to cameras with a focal length greater than 300mm, which would be quite an engineering feat, considering the current iPhone 14 Pro Max has to make do with a paltry 77mm on its snapper, certainly not periscope, zoom.

This September, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to mark the debut of a periscope in an iPhone, and next year the iPhone 16 Pro will also have a periscope, but not a “Super Telephoto”. So presumably the iPhone 16 Pro will have the periscope of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have an even more advanced system.

Super telephoto cameras are often used in sports and nature photography, and are also interesting to use for portraits, provided the photographer can be far enough away from the subject.

Furthermore, the same source claims that the main camera of the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 12% (1/1.14″) larger sensor than the iPhone 14 Pro Max (1/1.28″). The iPhone 15 Pro Max should stay true to its predecessor’s hardware.
