Sony has finally resolved its PlayStation 5 supply woes and the proof is in the pudding, or rather in its financial report for the last three months of 2022. The company has sold 7.1 million PS5 consoles, a huge increase from the 3 .9 million it managed a year earlier.

This boosted Games & Network Services’ revenue to JPY 1.246 billion, up from JPY 813 billion for the same period in 2021, a whopping 53 percent increase. More significantly, the majority of sales came from hardware rather than digital content as in the year-ago quarter (game sales also increased).

In total, Sony has sold 32.1 million PlayStation 5s since launch (up from a total of 25 million in November). Its goal is to hit 37 million by the end of its fiscal quarter (which ends in March, not December). The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has decreased, but the number of monthly active users has increased slightly.

Of course, Sony has other divisions, music for example. Harry Styles, Beyonce, and SZA topped the charts in the final quarter of 2022. Sony also produces movies, though revenue and revenue fell in that quarter.

Sales of image sensors increased and Sony increased production capacity compared to the same period in 2021. The company expects lower unit sales for the upcoming quarter, which will be “partially offset by an improvement in the product mix”, i.e. the selling more expensive sensors on average.

There was also something else, what was it? Well, telephone! Unfortunately, that’s not good news: In the last three months of 2022, the Mobile Communications division grossed 93 billion yen, down from 102 billion yen in the same period of 2021.
