Apple will start using microLED panels as early as 2024, it reveals The Herald of Korea. This is the third time we’ve heard that such a move is coming from a different third outlet, suggesting that the switch is inevitable.
According to a report from the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion (IITP), Apple is looking to produce the panels itself, but won’t be ready to do so when the transition begins. That’s why it will continue to buy panels from South Korea, with at least 60% of orders going to Samsung Display and LG Display.
The transition from organic light-emitting diode display technology to micro light-emitting diode technology will begin in 2024 with the Apple Watch Ultra. Once the panels mature and yields and prices improve, we’ll see iPhones with microLED screens. However, IITP has reminded us that this will happen no earlier than 2025.
The report also mentioned that Apple’s push for M1 processor chip independence in MacBooks could weaken the market dominance of Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom, while bolstering foundries such as TSMC and Samsung Semiconductor. The Taiwanese manufacturer may have an advantage in that battle as it is expanding a factory in Arizona that will be ready next year.
