Apple is engaged in a battle to reduce its reliance on third-party vendors by bringing component manufacturing in-house. Just as it has done with its A-series mobile chipsets and M-series SoCs, Cupertino is said to bring in-house wireless chips, 5G modems, and even display manufacturing for its iPhones, Apple Watches, and Macs.
The latest analyst semiconductor survey Ming Chi Kuo says Apple will backtrack on the development of its Wi-Fi chip and continue to rely on Broadcom as a key supplier. Apple is devoting the majority of its IC design resources to developing its chipset. Kuo also says that Apple is still prioritizing the development of its 5G modem over the Wi-Fi chip project.
Apple will likely move to Wi-Fi 6E in its upcoming iPhone 15 models and the rest of its product portfolio. Kuo confirmed that Apple’s Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo chip is still in the works. Mark Gurman also confirmed that Apple is still working on the Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo chip.
